Swim Class
Feb. 10th, 2005 09:12 amYes, not running has been bad. Yes, I am "allowed" to walk for progressively longer each day, as long as my leg doesn't hurt. Well, it can hurt, but the pain can't carry over into the next time I walk; you know, it can't accumulate. So, I'm up to 25 minutes every other day, and no, the pain is not quite down by the time I get to walk again.
Time to go back to the doctor and find out why not.
And I need to do this, because I've gained 5 pounds since I stopped running, and my sense of fitness is really down. I don't feel great when all I do is lift weights every other day or so. Especially when I lift by myself. I get a really good lift with Catherine, since we compete a bit, but if all I do is lift weights, I still don't feel very fit. I need to do something else, for at least half an hour of aerobics, every day. I need to run!
So I'm still swimming, and I've been taking lessons, so in stead of just using a kickboard, for the first time in my life, I've got my face in the water and I'm actually doing a swimming stroke. I'm almost doing the crawl for laps, although I still get really out of breath because I'm still having trouble getting enough air while I'm swimming. I am learning the backstroke also, and each lesson, we are learning more of what it means to do the stroke properly. I can't breast stroke very well: it's more like being a submarine and occasionally poking my head out of the water.
And last night we started to learn kick turns! So my head is still echoing with the water stuck in my sinus cavity. But it was fun, and will motivate me to get back to the pool. It's something fun to do tonight, something I might be able to learn, something to think about other than trying to get enough breath while my arm is coming around and my legs aren't kicking enough and I'm trying to remember to bring my arms out of the water more between breaths and and and ...

Date: 2005-02-10 12:21 pm (UTC)When you swim as poorly as I still do, and are as terrified as I have been of the water, swimming is not an aerobic exercise, even when I swim 35 minutes a day, 4 days a week. Nothing is a substitute for running. It's just something else I'll add in, and keep planning to run again soon.
