And it's a New Year
Jan. 3rd, 2005 08:42 amAt least it started right: parties with Catherine's crew and with Stilyagi, and our first breakfast together in the new year (spinach mushroom fritattas, yum!).
I made dinner for Catherine for the first time (real cooking, more than one course).
The tree, sacrificed to bring in the new year, has now been un-decorated and is waiting for disposal in the front yard.
Anya, installed in the kitten room, is doing worse. Her bladder releases in her sleep, and has done so twice in the past two days. She may be limited to the kitten room permanently, since the first time it happened was only 3 hours after her walk. The assumption at the time was still that she would waken when she had to go out, so she was sleeping on the other couch in the living room with us at the time. Now the trick is to make sure that she doesn't fall asleep when she's in the living room, only when she's in the kitten room, which is much more washable.
I am looking forward to the new part for my carpet cleaner, which has been broken for more than two months. Hoover is re-designing the part, and promises to the send the new part as soon as it is available. I am looking forward to being able to return the carpet to its white state, and to washing the couch upholstery.
I've gone to two women's basketball games in the last week, after mising their entire last season. It has been fun. They are losing badly, but it's still fun to get into a sport. I really miss hockey, as well.
And I'm up to swimming 4 days a week. My goal is 6 days each week. Lessons start soon so that I can do more than use a kickboard. My leg is not healing, but the constant pain is gone, which is really nice. I am hoping that the next visit will be somewhat more productive in terms of prognosis, and give me something to work with other than "Don't run (walk/bike/elliptical) for three months." I don't know whether to push for the MRI and find the actual site of the tear, or try for something else. I'm definitely taking Catherine with me because she has more experience asking questions and getting answers in this area.

Nancy and I do this regularly now. She acts as the patient, asks lots of questions, and interacts with the doctor. I take notes. It's amazing the stuff that the doctor said, that she does not remember. Some due to being busy interacting, some due to natural selective memory for the good parts, and some I think due to the doctor wanting to gloss over parts of the conversation, and since Nancy is in conversation she gets drawn into the gloss.
Comparing notes after, and working out action plans with all the information, is very helpful.
I'm not up on your medical issues. I certainly hope they are less dire than ours. But however you arrange it, a second person at the doctor appointment may still be a useful technique for you.
Oh, and good luck. My best wishes to you.
