Summer of Singing

talyenI am still very dedicated to voice down here. Here's what's going on with that:
Twice a week I have lessons 50 miles away with an opera singer. Once a week, we work on technique, and pick out songs for me to work on for class solos. We pick different music than I normally get to sing in the choirs. Once a week, I attend a master class, wherein I or others who are taking lessons with this opera singer perform on stage for our classmates, solo. She and then we and our classmates critique ourselves. Later in the summer, we'll hold a recital.
Last Saturday I performed an entire song, solo, at the first master class, as did two others. I went last. It went well. Afterwards, everyone was surprised it was my first time singing an entire solo.
Once a week I have rehearsal for 2.5 - 3 hours for MUSE. We have performances an average of once/week. This week, we have two.
Once a week I have rehearsal for 2 hours with St John's choir. We rehearse again just before the service on Sunday mornings, as well.
All in all, I have two or sometimes three "days off" each week, so those are the days I use my iPod and keyboard to learn my music and practice for my master class -- as well as read, do laundry, clean the house and car, etc. Now that I have asthma, that's when I can run without it interfering with my voice, too.
Remember almost two years ago, when I was so afraid to be up on stage? I still am, and I could hear the quaver in my voice even in the videotape. But I am much more confident now, and have to keep myself from signing up to sing in the master class each week for the wonderful practice that it is. It's scary, but it's great.
My next challenges are two pieces of classical music and something from a musical for these summertime lessons. I love classical music!
This is all in addition to the 14 pieces I have memorized (including dynamics, in one of which I have a solo) for the concert in two weeks, and the piece for Sunday, in which I have a solo. And after that, MUSE will be preparing for our trip to Miami, and there will be more to learn. There always is.
