Hey, I can (sorta, still) swim!
It took me 10 minutes to remember how to swim. Meanwhile, I breathed water, sweated in fear, and tried somewhat successfully to slow my heartrate so I would be able to breathe fewer times as I tried my way across.
I couldn't remember how to move my arms, my legs, how to get air, and all that. And I was terrified of drowning. I breathed lots of water, and coughed embarrassingly.
It had been two years since I last swam. I'll go back tomorrow. I did actually swim for 10 minutes after figuring out again how. No flips at the ends to keep going (nope, don't remember that very well, either), but no more drowning until the last lap.
I was surprised that the terror returned as strongly as it did. I thought I had conquered it, but I guess it was just familiarity. New pool, new fear. More tomorrow.
